Tubs of pico de gallo salsa, guacamole and a wrapped burrito on a fridge shelf with jalapeños

Heads Up: Jalapeño Wraps & Salads Recalled Nationwide

Tested & Approved

Quick one, because this is the kind of news that"s actually urgent. Go check your fridge before you make lunch. A salmonella outbreak linked to fresh jalapeños has set off a nationwide recall of pre-made salsas, guac, wraps, and burritos sold at Walmart, Target, Trader Joe"s, Kroger, and Whole Foods. If you buy those refrigerated Mexican-style shortcuts like I do, five of your minutes right now beats a week feeling awful.

The 30-second version

Federal officials say the outbreak has sickened at least 345 people across 27 states, with 36 people hospitalized. The trail led back to fresh jalapeños grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed through a company called Coast Citrus. Taylor Farms then pulled a big list of prepared foods made with those peppers as a precaution. They say no illnesses have been confirmed from their specific products, but the recall is real and it"s wide.

Open the fridge and check these

Look for anything from those stores in these categories:

  • Pico de gallo and other fresh salsas (verde, roja, pineapple-mango)
  • Guacamole and taco dip
  • Burritos and wraps
  • Prepared salads with salsa — Trader Joe"s recalled 668 packages of its Fiesta Salad with Shrimp

The tell is the date. The recall covers products with a “Best If Used By” date up to and including August 16, 2026. Flip the container over, read the stamp, done. And no, you can"t smell your way out of this one. Salmonella leaves no clue on the food itself.

If you already ate some

Don"t panic, just pay attention for the next few days. Salmonella usually shows up as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after eating. Most healthy adults ride it out in under a week. Call a doctor if you get a high fever (over 102°F), diarrhea that lasts more than three days, blood in your stool, or you can"t keep fluids down. Little kids and older adults deserve a closer watch.

What to do with the container

Toss it, or take it back to the store for a refund. No receipt needed at most chains for a recall. Then give the fridge shelf a quick wipe and wash your hands, since that"s where cross-contamination sneaks in. Craving nachos tonight? Skip the recalled tubs and chop fresh tomato, onion, and lime for a two-minute pico instead. Same fifteen-minute dinner energy, zero recall stress.
