Classic Vanilla Malt Float – Easy Soda Fountain Dessert

A creamy, fizzy soda fountain classic — this root beer float recipe gets malt shop flair from malted milk powder stirred into scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, divided
  • 2 tablespoons malted milk powder
  • 1 (12 oz) can or bottle of root beer, well chilled
  • Whipped cream, for topping (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon malted milk powder balls or crushed malt candy, for garnish (optional)
  • 1 maraschino cherry (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chill a tall 16-ounce glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes for extra frostiness.
  2. In a small bowl, mash 1 scoop of the vanilla ice cream with the malted milk powder until well combined and slightly softened.
  3. Spoon the malted ice cream mixture into the bottom of the chilled glass.
  4. Slowly pour the root beer over the ice cream, tilting the glass slightly to reduce excessive foaming.
  5. Let the fizz settle for a few seconds, then add the second scoop of plain vanilla ice cream on top.
  6. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of malted milk balls, and a cherry, if desired.
  7. Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon.

Notes

Use very cold root beer and hard-frozen ice cream so the float stays thick and doesn"t turn watery too fast. Pour the soda slowly down the side of the glass to control the foam. For a stronger malt flavor, stir an extra teaspoon of malted milk powder directly into the root beer before adding the ice cream.
