Ultimate Mashed Potatoes

A creamy, rich, and fluffy mashed potato recipe that includes garlic for extra depth of flavor, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1 tablespoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed and cold
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes, garlic cloves, and 1 tablespoon of salt in a large pot. Cover with cold water by about 2 inches.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 20-25 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and garlic well, then return them to the pot and place over low heat for 1-2 minutes to dry out any excess moisture.
  4. Mash the potatoes and garlic until smooth using a potato masher or ricer.
  5. Gradually stir in the cold butter, a few cubes at a time, until fully incorporated and creamy.
  6. Slowly add the warmed milk while stirring until you reach the desired creamy consistency.
  7. Season with additional salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Notes

For extra creamy potatoes, use a potato ricer instead of a masher. Warm the milk before adding to keep the mash hot. Adjust garlic amount to your preference for milder or stronger flavor.
