The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie

A classic chocolate chip cookie recipe with a perfect balance of crispy edges and chewy centers, featuring brown butter for a rich, deep flavor and a generous amount of chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¾ cup ( sticks) unsalted butter, cut into chunks
  • ⅔ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Scant ½ teaspoon salt
  • Generous ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1¾ cups unbleached all-purpose white flour
  • to 2 cups semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease two large baking sheets or line them with parchment paper.
  3. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter at 50% power until just melted but not runny, stirring every 30 seconds.
  4. Stir the butter until lump-free and barely warm.
  5. Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to the butter and mix until combined.
  6. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  7. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  8. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  9. Fold in the chocolate chips gently with a wooden spoon.
  10. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  11. Bake for about 10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown but the centers are still soft.
  12. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Using brown butter adds a nutty depth of flavor that elevates these cookies beyond the ordinary. Be careful not to overbake to maintain a chewy center. Room temperature ingredients help achieve the best texture.
