Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake

A creamy and comforting casserole combining seasoned Swedish-style meatballs, tender egg noodles, and a rich, creamy sauce topped with Swiss cheese. This dish brings all the flavors of classic Swedish meatballs into a hearty baked meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil for browning meatballs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  4. Form mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  5. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides but do not cook through completely; remove from heat.
  6. In the same skillet, combine beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. In a baking dish, spread cooked noodles evenly. Nestle browned meatballs on top of noodles.
  8. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the noodles and meatballs.
  9. Sprinkle shredded Swiss cheese over the top.
  10. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly and meatballs are cooked through.
  11. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Browning the meatballs before baking adds flavor and texture. The nutmeg in the meatballs pairs beautifully with the creamy sauce and Swiss cheese, creating a comforting and rich dish. For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
