Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 3/4 teaspoon almond extract or vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup colored sugar (orange, black, and purple recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and almond or vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into portions and roll each portion into a log shape.
  6. Sprinkle colored sugar evenly over the dough logs and gently press to adhere.
  7. Roll the dough logs tightly to create a spiral effect with the colored sugar.
  8. Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  9. Slice the chilled dough into 1/4-inch thick cookies and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  10. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, use colored sanding sugar to achieve vibrant spirals. Chilling the dough logs before slicing helps maintain the spiral shape during baking. You can customize the colors to fit any holiday or theme.
