Soft Christmas Peppermints (Old-Fashioned Butter Mints)

Traditional soft butter mints with a smooth, creamy texture and refreshing peppermint flavor, perfect for Christmas gifts or holiday treats.

  • ½ cup butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract (adjust to taste)
  • Red gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare a work surface with parchment paper and have extra powdered sugar ready for rolling.
  2. Beat room temperature butter in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Add heavy cream, powdered sugar, and peppermint extract; mix well until firm dough forms.
  4. Divide dough into two parts: color ¼ with red gel food coloring, leave ¾ white.
  5. Roll each portion into ropes and twist smaller red rope around thicker white rope.
  6. Cut twisted ropes into small pieces and let them dry before serving.

Notes

Use extra powdered sugar if dough is sticky for easier handling. Adjust peppermint extract amount to taste for stronger flavor. For easier shaping, chill dough briefly if too soft.
