Soft Christmas Sugar Cookies

Classic soft sugar cookies perfect for Christmas, with a tender texture and buttery flavor ideal for decorating or enjoying plain.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, mixing until just combined.
  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  7. Flatten each ball gently with the bottom of a glass or your hand to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden but centers are still soft.
  9. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For softer cookies, avoid overbaking and remove from oven once edges just start to turn golden. Dough can be chilled overnight for easier handling. Decorate with icing or sprinkles once cooled.
