Salted Caramel Apple Pie Bars

Delicious apple pie bars with a shortbread crust, cinnamon-spiced apple filling, and a streusel topping, finished with a drizzle of salted caramel sauce. Perfect for a fall treat.

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup white or whole wheat flour
  • 56 large apples, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Mix melted butter, sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and flour to make the shortbread crust.
  3. Press the crust mixture evenly into the bottom of the pan.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the filling.
  5. Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust.
  6. Bake until the crust is set and apples are tender.
  7. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 20 minutes at room temperature.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  9. Lift the bars out using the parchment overhang and cut into bars.
  10. Drizzle salted caramel sauce on top before serving or serve the sauce on the side.

Notes

These bars can be enjoyed warm, at room temperature, or cold. Using tart apples like Granny Smith or Wolf River apples works best. Adjust sugar to taste if you prefer less sweetness.
