Perfect Baked Sweet Potato

A simple, foolproof method for baking sweet potatoes to tender, caramelized perfection—no foil required.

  • 4 medium sweet potatoes (about 8 ounces each)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup.
  2. Scrub sweet potatoes thoroughly and pat dry. Pierce each potato several times with a fork. Rub with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.
  3. Place potatoes on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until very tender, about 45–60 minutes, depending on size. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, split the baked sweet potatoes and top with butter, cinnamon, or a sprinkle of brown sugar. Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated. Baking without foil allows the skin to crisp up nicely.
