Luxurious Black Velvet Cake

Luxurious Black Velvet Cake is an ultra-moist, rich chocolate cake naturally colored with black cocoa powder and buttermilk, frosted with silky black cocoa buttercream for a decadent, Oreo-like flavor.

  • 13 ounces all-purpose flour
  • 6 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 16 ounces granulated sugar
  • 4 ounces black cocoa powder
  • 2 ounces melted chocolate
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 ounces strong hot coffee
  • 8 ounces warm buttermilk (110ºF)
  • 4 ounces vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat to 350ºF/176ºC. Grease three 8-inch cake pans with pan release.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk melted chocolate, black cocoa powder, hot coffee, vanilla, and oil until combined. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy, add eggs one at a time, then mix in cocoa mixture and dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk until smooth.
  3. Divide batter evenly among pans and bake 24-30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then invert onto racks to cool completely. Frost with black cocoa buttercream.

Notes

Use black cocoa powder for natural deep color without dye. Batter will be thin but bakes up moist. Chill cake layers before frosting to ease assembly. For shine, add corn syrup to frosting.
