Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy and tangy fried green tomatoes make a perfect Southern-style appetizer or side dish.

For the Crust:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. In a shallow dish, mix flour, salt, and pepper. In another dish, whisk together eggs and buttermilk. In a third dish, combine cornmeal, breadcrumbs, and paprika.
  2. Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat with the cornmeal mixture.
  3. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the coated tomato slices in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
