Fried Cabbage

A simple and flavorful Southern-style fried cabbage recipe cooked with onions and bacon for a delicious side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté in the bacon drippings until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to coat with the bacon drippings and onions.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned, about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and cooked bacon pieces. Cook for another 2 minutes to combine flavors.
  7. Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a splash of hot sauce or a pinch of smoked paprika. Be sure to cook the cabbage until tender but not mushy for the best texture.
