Creamy Bean Soup With Kielbasa

A flavorful and creamy soup combining smoky kielbasa sausage with tender Great Northern beans in a savory broth, perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) Great Northern beans, rinsed and drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley and grated Parmesan cheese for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a medium stock pot over medium heat. Add kielbasa slices and cook until browned on both sides. Remove kielbasa and set aside.
  2. Melt butter in the same pot. Add chopped onion, carrots, garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook for 7-10 minutes until carrots begin to soften.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir well. Cook for 1 more minute to form a roux.
  4. Slowly pour in chicken broth, milk, and Worcestershire sauce while stirring continuously. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Return the browned kielbasa to the pot. Add the rinsed and drained beans. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve warm, garnished with chopped parsley and grated Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

Browning the kielbasa before adding it to the soup enhances its smoky flavor. Use Great Northern beans for a creamy texture, but navy or Cannellini beans can be substituted. Adjust salt if using salted butter or broth.
