Classic Southern Pea Salad

A delicious and refreshing Southern pea salad perfect as a quick and easy side dish for spring and summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 4 cups frozen peas, thawed
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 cup red onion, diced
  • 8 oz cheddar cheese, cubed small

Instructions

  1. Cut bacon into small pieces and cook until crispy in a large pot, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from pan, drain on paper towels, and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add diced onion, cubed cheddar cheese, thawed peas, and crumbled bacon to the bowl. Gently stir to coat everything in the dressing.
  4. Reserve some bacon pieces for garnish if desired.
  5. Chill the salad for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to combine before serving.
  6. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir well before serving.

Notes

This salad can be made several days ahead and tastes best after chilling to blend the flavors. Use thick-cut bacon for added texture and reserve some bacon for garnish to enhance presentation.
