For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour.
  4. Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  5. For frosting, beat butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in cream, vanilla, and salt until fluffy.
  6. Frost cooled cake layers, stacking with frosting between and covering the top and sides. Decorate as desired.
