Delicate spiced cookies filled with a honey-nut cream, inspired by the flavors of traditional baklava.

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Whisk flour, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a bowl. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Mix in egg yolk and vanilla.
  2. Gradually add dry ingredients to form a dough. Divide into two disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch rounds. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden. Cool completely.
  4. For filling: Pulse walnuts in a food processor until fine. Mix with honey, cream cheese, and powdered sugar until smooth.
  5. Spread filling on half the cookies and sandwich with remaining cookies. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
